How to Get Your Friends and Family to Love Training (Without Sounding Like a Gym Nerd)

training together

If you’re like me, fitness isn’t just a hobby. It’s a full-on lifestyle. I love it so much, I went and bought a gym here in Rocklin, California. Yep, instead of saving for my kids’ college, I’m funding battle ropes and kettlebells. Priorities, right?

You’d think that kind of passion would be contagious. That my wife and kids would be right there with me, spotting me on the bench or crushing HIIT classes.

Spoiler: Nope.

My kids won’t even spot me. And my wife? Took years to get her into the gym. But now? She is all in. Her own process. She has her own goals, her own favorite workouts, and she’s crushing it. That’s what I want for you and the people you care about.

So, how do you get your friends or family to love training like you do?

  1. Lead by example.
Forget preaching or nagging. Just show them how fitness helps you feel better, move easier, and enjoy life more. They’ll notice when you have more energy for family weekends or when that old knee pain doesn’t flare up on vacation.

  2. Make it easy.
This is NOT the time to brag about your 150-pound squat or your near-puking HIIT class. Instead, focus on the stuff that matters to them. Talk about feeling stronger for everyday life, having more energy, or sleeping better.

  3. Invite them.
Could be a walk around your neighborhood, a simple stretch session at home, or even a beginner-friendly Shred 27 class at the gym. Keep it light, fun, and pressure-free. The goal isn’t to “work out.”  it’s to move and enjoy time together.

Here’s a quick tip: Pick one person you care about and invite them to move with you this week. Not to sweat it out, just to have fun. This could be the spark that gets them hooked for good.

If you want to help them start easy, I’ve got you covered with a 20-minute arm workout you can do at home. It’s simple, effective, and guarantees a good arm pump. (No gym required.)

Fitness isn’t about being perfect or pushing yourself to the limit. It’s about finding a way to move that fits your life. Especially for the women and families here in Rocklin and our local area who want to be strong and healthy for the long haul.

So, start small. Lead by example. Invite with kindness. And watch how your tribe starts to move. Maybe they will even love training just like you.
