Why Walking Might Be the Most Underrated Workout

A lot of the time when I sit down for a consultation, someone tells me,

“I used to run… but I just can’t anymore.”

Their knees ache. Their back protests. Their lungs feel like they’re going to explode.
And their body just says, “Nah, we don’t do that anymore.”

And honestly?
That’s okay.

Most people who walk into Shred 27 here in Rocklin aren’t training for marathons.
They’re just trying to walk with purpose again.

Somewhere along the way, life got busy. The body slowed down. And running became something that belonged to a past version of themselves. The younger, more “athletic” self. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to run to get healthy again.

In fact, maybe running isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The Power of One Mile

A fascinating study out of the University of California followed 1,600 adults, ages 50 to 90, for ten years. About a quarter of them had type II diabetes. The results were incredible:

Those who walked just one mile a day cut their risk of cardiovascular death by 81%.
Among people with diabetes, that same daily mile meant they were half as likely to die from any cause, and five times less likely to die from heart failure, stroke, or other cardiovascular problems.

All that… from walking.
One. Single. Mile.

No sprints. No burpees. No “go hard or go home” fitness culture.
Just a simple, consistent walk — the kind that clears your head, regulates your blood sugar, drops your blood pressure, and makes your heart’s job easier.

Your Body Starts to Wake Up Again

Here’s what happens when you start walking regularly:

  • You feel more energized throughout the day.
  • You sleep better.
  • Your mood lifts.
  • Your clothes start fitting differently.
  • And “exercise” stops feeling like punishment… and starts feeling like freedom.

Walking isn’t a step backward. It’s a step toward reclaiming your health at your own pace.

You don’t need fancy equipment or a perfect plan.
You just need a reason to lace up your shoes and take that first step.

How to Get Started (Even If You Haven’t Exercised in Years)

If it’s been a while since you’ve moved consistently, start small. Grab your dog. Grab your spouse. Pop in your earbuds. Do whatever makes it enjoyable and aim for 20–25 minutes a day.

The hardest part isn’t the distance. It’s the decision to start.

Once you do, something amazing happens: your body remembers.
You begin to move more easily. You crave the fresh air. You feel proud that you did something for yourself.

And before long, you’ll realize it was never about how fast you moved.
Just that you did.
