Why Rest Days Are the Secret Weapon for Those Who Want Results

Have you ever found yourself on a roll, workouts clicking, energy high, feeling unstoppable, only to realize you’ve quietly worked out six or seven days in a row without a real break…
Guilty.

That was me this week.
It hit me (literally in the foot).

I’d been sneaking in “extra” workouts whenever I could, walking 12,000 steps a day, juggling work, and convincing myself I was just being consistent.
Turns out, I was also being a little dumb.

Because here’s the truth I coach other people on every day (and apparently needed to remind myself):
Your body doesn’t make progress during your workouts.
It makes progress after them.

That’s when your muscles rebuild, your hormones rebalance, and your nervous system resets.
That’s when your body adapts (if you actually let it).

But here’s the hard part, especially for driven, busy women: a rest day can feel like slacking off.

Maybe you’re focused on the number on the scale.
Or you finally feel like you’re in a groove and don’t want to “lose momentum.”
That voice in your head whispers, “If you stop now, you’ll fall behind.”

The problem? That voice is wrong.

You’re not losing momentum. You’re giving your body time to cash the checks your workouts are writing.

And if you don’t, your body will find its own way to make you stop. Through pain, exhaustion, or injury.
(Ask my foot.)

So this week, here’s your challenge (and it might be the most important fitness goal you set):

  1. Map it out.
Don’t just plan your workouts. Schedule your recovery days too. Make them non-negotiable.
  2. Make recovery intentional.
Mobility work, stretching, walking, yoga, foam rolling, or yes, even a nap, all count. The goal isn’t doing nothing. It’s giving your body what it needs to recharge.
  3. Shift the mindset.
Rest isn’t a pause from training. It’s part of training.

Because once we hit our 40s and beyond, recovery becomes the difference-maker. Hormones shift. Sleep changes. Stress stacks up faster.
You can’t just outwork it anymore. You have to outsmart it.

So be smart. Train hard, recover harder, and remember:
Doing less, sometimes, is exactly what keeps you doing more for years to come.
