You already know what to do.
Exercise more. Eat better. Keep an eye on your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Manage your stress.
None of that is new information. You’ve known it for years. So why is it still so hard to actually do it consistently?
Here’s the answer (and it’s not what most people expect).
The Study That confirmed what i think About Fitness Results
A research study followed 2,000 adults over two years. Every single participant was given the same four habits to build:
- Regular exercise
- Healthy eating patterns
- Mental challenges to keep the brain sharp
- Monitoring key health markers (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar)
Same information. Same four goals. But the groups were set up very differently.
Group A received 38 guided sessions over two years, a structured workout schedule, regular coaching check-ins, and accountability for their medical numbers.
Group B received six information sessions and essentially a “good luck.”
Here’s what happened: both groups improved. Good information and a clear plan do work. But Group A, the group with structure, accountability, and a team behind them, achieved significantly better results.
Not because they were more motivated. Not because they worked harder. Not because they had better information.
Because they had a system.
The Real Reason Most People Stall
When you’re doing it alone, every single day is a decision. Should I go today? Is this week too busy? I’ll start fresh Monday.
That mental negotiation is exhausting and it’s where most people lose.
Group A didn’t have that problem. They looked at a schedule. They showed up. Someone was expecting them. Their vague intentions became visible, measurable progress.
That’s not a motivation hack. That’s just how humans work.
3 Things You Can Do Right Now
You don’t have to wait to put this into practice. Here are three structure-first actions you can take today:
1. Write your workouts on your calendar like appointments. Not “I’ll try to exercise this week.” Pick three specific times, put them in your calendar, and treat them like a meeting you can’t cancel. The decision is already made.
2. Identify one number to track. Blood pressure. Resting heart rate. Steps per day. Pick one health marker and check it weekly. What gets measured gets managed. Extra points: don’t use weight.
3. Tell someone your plan. Text a friend, tell a family member, or shoot me a DM on Facebook or Instagram. External accountability, even informal, has been shown to meaningfully increase follow-through. You don’t need a coach to borrow some accountability.
What This Looks Like at Shred 27
This study describes exactly what we’ve built in Rocklin.
Our members don’t just get a good workout. They get a schedule, a community that expects to see them, coaches who know their names, and for members who want it, personalized success coaching with regular check-ins built right into their programming.
The information at most gyms is fine. It’s the structure that’s missing.
If you’ve been relying on willpower and it hasn’t been working, that’s a system problem. And system problems have system solutions.
