When Summer Wrecks Your Routine (Here’s What to Do Instead)

summer

Is this time of summer making it nearly impossible to stick to a routine?

You’re not imagining it.

Schedules are sideways.
The house is louder than usual.
You’re trying to work, shuttle kids, squeeze in a family trip, and remember who still needs new school shoes.

Same here.

I was mapping out my next 6-8 week training block and realized: my schedule is absolute chaos. There is no world where I’m getting to the gym 4-5 times a week right now. I’ll be lucky to hit three.

The old version of me would have written the whole thing off. “If I can’t do it all, why bother?”

But the more experienced version of me knows better.

Three solid workouts? That’s still a win.
Daily movement that isn’t in a gym? Still matters.
And nothing has to be perfect to be effective.

If you’re in a similar season (and I know many of you are) here’s your reminder: this doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Summer doesn’t have to destroy your routine. But you do have to shift your mindset.

Here’s what I’m focusing on right now:

1. Quality Over Quantity in the Gym

Every session matters. Show up with focus, and you can do a lot in a little time.

2. NEAT Movement All Day

Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (aka all the stuff that isn’t working out) burns more calories than you think. Walks, chores, stairs—they all count.

3. Protein First, Less Grazing

I’m leaning into high-protein meals and snacking less throughout the day. Also, summer fruit is the MVP of simple, energizing carbs.

4. A Solid Bedtime Routine

Sleep isn’t optional if you want energy, stable mood, and consistent effort. That “one more episode” habit? It’s not helping.

Don’t Cancel Your Gym Membership Over a Busy Schedule

If you’re training at a women’s gym in Rocklin, (or anywhere, really), don’t hit pause just because life is hectic. The best gyms offer flexible options, temporary downgrades, or custom coaching to help you stay in motion.

The great ones (yep, I’m talking about us at Shred 27) will build a short-term plan that fits your season and keeps your momentum going.
