I sat down with one of my members this week for her six-week Health Blueprint Session.
She’s 62. She walked in with that look I’ve seen before. Somewhere between proud and confused. She’d been showing up consistently, working hard, eating better. And yet…
“My weight is basically the same,” she said. “But I’m down two pant sizes. How does that even make sense?”
I pulled up her numbers. She had gained over a pound of lean muscle. At 62 years old. In six weeks.
She got quiet. Then she said something I haven’t stopped thinking about: “I actually feel it. I just didn’t trust myself enough to believe it was real.”
If you’ve ever stood on a scale and felt your motivation drain out through the floor, this one’s for you.
Why the Scale Is A lying jerk
The scale measures one thing: your total weight. Bones, organs, water, muscle, fat…all of it, lumped together into a single number that tells you almost nothing about what’s actually changing in your body.
Here’s what nobody in the fitness industry tells women over 40: muscle is denser than fat. One pound of muscle takes up significantly less space than one pound of fat. So when you’re losing fat and gaining muscle simultaneously (which is exactly what happens with properly structured strength training) your weight can stay flat while your body is completely transforming.
Two pant sizes. Same number on the scale.
What initially felt like failure is actually your body doing exactly what you want it to do.
ditch the scale and pay attention to these 4 things instead
1. How your clothes fit. This is the most honest mirror you have. Try on the same pair of jeans every two weeks. Notice where they’re looser. That’s real data.
2. Your energy levels throughout the day. Are you hitting a 2pm wall? Do you wake up tired? Improved metabolic health shows up in your energy long before it shows up anywhere else. Keep a simple 1-10 energy rating in your phone each evening.
3. Your strength numbers. Can you do more reps than last week? Lift slightly heavier? That progression IS the result. Strength gains in women over 40 are a direct indicator of metabolic improvement, hormone regulation, and bone density. These things matter far more than a number on a scale.
4. How you feel in your own skin. This one sounds soft. It isn’t. Confidence, posture, and how you carry yourself are measurable, just not by a device. Take a photo every four weeks. Same outfit, same lighting. The woman looking back at you will tell you the truth.
why women at shred 27 are flocking to strength sessions
Here’s the clinical reality, and as a Registered Nurse I want you to hear this clearly:
After 40, and especially through perimenopause and menopause, estrogen decline accelerates muscle loss and fat redistribution. The default fitness response most women have tried (more cardio, less food) actually accelerates this process. It spikes cortisol, breaks down muscle tissue, and leaves you exhausted and frustrated.
Structured strength training reverses this. It builds and preserves lean muscle, which raises your resting metabolic rate, stabilizes blood sugar, supports bone density, and regulates the hormonal chaos that makes this decade so hard on your body.
This is not opinion. This is physiology.
The woman in my studio this week didn’t lose 10 pounds in six weeks. She did something harder and more permanent: she changed her body composition, built real strength, and gave her metabolism a reason to work for her again. At 62.
a couple weeks in, something shifted
She almost didn’t come in for her initial assessment. She’d tried before. Big box gyms, online programs, group classes full of women a third of her age. Every attempt ended the same way, and that track record had quietly become a story she told herself about who she was.
A woman who starts things and doesn’t finish them.
What she needed wasn’t more willpower. She needed a plan that was built for her body, her history, and her life. Not a generic program designed for a 28-year-old.
She showed up anyway. And somewhere around week two or three, something shifted. Not dramatically. Just quietly. She started feeling strong in a way she’d forgotten was possible.
Now she’s asking what the next six weeks look like.
That old thought “if I could just stick with something for more than a few weeks” is just gone.
