Why “Fun” Might Be the Most Underrated Fitness Strategy

fun

“Have fun! It’s the only thing that will keep you going.”

That’s what Arnold said in his newsletter this week. And honestly? It stopped me mid-scroll.

Because after years of coaching women who’ve tried all the calorie-counting apps, meal-prepping plans, macro calculators, and magic supplements… it hit me:

We’ve completely overcomplicated getting healthy.

I’ve done it too.

I’ve asked myself:

  • Is this workout the most effective?

  • How many calories were in that protein bar?

  • Should I switch programs again?

The irony? All that mental juggling didn’t get me stronger, leaner, or happier.

It just got me tired.

And I see this every week with new women who walk into our gym here in Rocklin. They’re burned out on trying so hard without much to show for it. They don’t need another perfect plan. They need something they’ll actually want to do.

What actually works? The fun plan.

The best fitness plan isn’t the trendiest one or the most “science-backed” one. It’s the one you’ll actually stick to. That means you like it enough to do it again tomorrow.

So if your current health plan feels like a chore chart… let’s rework the approach.

Here’s how to make health more enjoyable and actually sustainable (whether you’re just getting started or jumping back in after a break):

1. Don’t overthink it.

You don’t need to understand insulin response curves to go for a walk. You don’t need 50 reels about carb timing. You need movement. Bonus points if you smile while doing it.

2. Stick to something.

Hopping from plan to plan is the fastest way to see zero results. Pick a program Shred 27 (for example), walking, strength training, and follow it. We coach women through that exact process at our gym. Structure creates momentum.

3. Compete with yourself.

Not with your friend or a fitness influencer with a six-pack and a ring light. With you. Can you go one rep heavier? Rest a little less? Walk 5 minutes longer? Stack those small wins.

4. Find your people.

Accountability changes everything. Show up for your workout, but also show up for your gym buddies. Our local community here in Rocklin and the surrounding area is packed with women supporting each other, laughing between sets, and reminding each other that this is supposed to be fun. I see it all the time at the parks, at work, and of course, at the gym.

5. Be real about your goals.

Do you want energy to chase your kids? Confidence to wear that dress again? Less knee pain? Stronger arms? Better sleep? Say it out loud. Own it. Goals don’t have to be Instagram-worthy. They just have to matter to you.

And when you miss a day (or a whole week)? Laugh. Reset. Go again. That’s what the long-haul looks like.

Try this today:

Ask yourself: “What’s one healthy thing I might actually enjoy today?”

Could be:

  • A walk around the block while listening to your favorite playlist.

  • Trying a new high-protein recipe that doesn’t taste like cardboard.

  • Doing a stretch session while watching trash TV.

Pick one. Do it. Done.
